It was early evening when Lin and Viv returned to the Main Street house and entered the foyer. As soon as they switched on the lights, footsteps could be heard pacing around in the upstairs bedroom.
âHello,â Lin called. âItâs me and Viv back again.â
The pacing grew heavier and quicker like someone was hurrying back and forth across the room.
âShould we go up?â Viv asked.
Lin gave her a look of surprise. âYouâre getting brave.â
With a shrug, she said, âWell, he hasnât hurt us yet. Yet being the important word.â
Lin led the way upstairs and as soon as they entered the large bedroom, she glanced over at the desk.
âA friend of mine stopped by to chat with me recently when I was standing in front of the house,â she said to the ghost. âHis father-in-law was with him. The older man sat in the car while his son-in-law and I talked. The older man could see you in the window.â Lin gestured to the window overlooking Main Street.
A rush of cold air flooded the room causing Lin to be hopeful that the ghost might be ready to appear, but he didnât become visible.
âWere you fond of the people who used to live here? Nicholas and Catherine Whittaker. They lived here for quite a long time. You must have been very used to them being in the house.â
Loud knocking behind them made Lin and Viv jump.
âIs that a yes or a no?â Viv whispered.
âNot sure.â Lin continued to talk to the spirit. âI found out that Catherine Whittaker was a direct descendant of the Bean family. And the man I was speaking with out front earlier, his wife Gemma is a distant relative of the Beans. Long ago, the Beans owned the land this house is built on. And in fact, a man named George Bean purchased the land in the 1800s and was the one who had this house built.â
The house shook and quaked as if an earthquake were taking place on the island, and Viv clutched her cousinâs arm.
âWhatâs going on? Should we run?â
Lin shook her head. âWeâll be okay. Something I said touched a nerve.â
Slowly, the vibration in the house subsided.
âThe older man in the car could see you, but I canât,â Lin told the ghost. âI know you want help from us. Maybe it would be helpful, if you could become visible to us? That way, we could look at old photographs and try to find out your name. Unless you could write your name on the paper on the desk?â
Lin could see a little shimmer of atoms by the desk, and she held her breath, ready to see the ghost take shape, but the only things that appeared were the paper and the pen, hanging suspended in the air. As she and Viv stepped closer, the piece of paper fluttered down to the desktop. They both watched as the pen jiggled a little, but then the point aimed toward the paper and gently floated down.
Lin held her breath as the pen shakily moved, just a bit, on the paper.
